Embracing AI in Government: A Conversation on Innovations and Opportunities with Polimorphic and Ichi

The incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into government operations is no longer just a futuristic concept—it is the present reality being embraced by local governments to enhance services and adapt to rapidly changing demands. In a recent Capstone Conversation podcast, host Jared Asch sat down with Parth Shah from Polimorphic and Brandon Levey from Ichi to explore how their companies are driving innovation in govtech and helping municipalities address the challenges of the 21st century.

## The AI Frontier in Government

Jared Asch opened the discussion by outlining the evolution of AI and its growing role in providing solutions for state and local governments. Last week, the podcast featured a councilman from Fairfield who shared his perspective on innovation in tech. Continuing this trajectory, the episode introduced Parth Shah and Brandon Levey, who shared insights from their innovative companies, Polimorphic and Ichi, respectively. They each elaborated on how AI is not only creating efficiencies but is also enabling new outcomes and enhancing service delivery.

### AI Serving the People

Parth Shah from Polimorphic, with his roots in engineering and AI, spoke about his journey and how it ties to his passion for local government. He emphasized AI’s capacity to serve as an enabling technology to improve customer service in government roles. Polimorphic focuses on constructing an AI concierge service that drastically streamlines governmental customer service processes, enabling interactions in multiple languages to ensure inclusivity and efficiency.

According to Shah, AI allows governments to focus on providing great customer service by taking away repetitive rote tasks and freeing up capacity for more meaningful work. The use of AI in roles such as front desk inquiries has already shown significant improvement in workload handling and staff morale, leading to better retention and job satisfaction.

### Bridging the Gap in Construction and Planning

Brandon Levey of Ichi addressed the complexity and labor bottlenecks in the construction and government regulatory space. Ichi’s technology targets the foundational layers of construction management, focusing on enhancing communication and decision-making through advanced AI tools. Levey highlighted real-world scenarios where Ichi is making a notable impact, such as using AI to effectively manage language barriers between inspectors and contractors in the field, facilitating quicker resolutions on building projects that would otherwise experience delays.

Levey noted that many cities face staffing shortages, particularly for specialized roles such as building plan examiners and inspectors. His perspective emphasized how AI can elevate existing staff's proficiency and dramatically reduce wait times for project approvals, proving beneficial across commercial and governmental sectors.

## Addressing Challenges and Overcoming Fears

Despite the evident benefits, integrating AI into government does not come without challenges. Both Shah and Levey acknowledged the hesitance of some governmental entities to adopt AI technology, often fueled by labor unions' concerns about job displacement. However, they argue that AI serves more as an augmentative tool rather than a replacement, providing an opportunity to upskill the workforce and improve work conditions.

They encouraged stakeholders to engage directly with AI tools to alleviate fears, while emphasizing the need to find trusted AI partners to guide this transition. The discussion echoed a shared sentiment: the cost of inaction could far outweigh the uncertainties of deploying AI solutions.

## A Call to Action for Government Innovation

For government officials and decision-makers unfamiliar with AI, Shah and Levey underscored the importance of proactive engagement and education to demystify AI's role. As municipalities face increasing demands with diminishing resources, embracing AI might not just be advantageous—it could be essential for sustaining high-quality public services.

Both Polimorphic and Ichi exemplify how AI can empower government employees to tackle more strategic tasks, thus fostering a capable, prepared, and forward-looking public service environment. By addressing current operational inefficiencies and elevating the quality of constituent interactions, AI emerges as a pivotal catalyst for future-oriented governance.

This conversation highlighted the critical importance of urgency and action in transforming how government services are perceived and delivered—ensuring they meet the expectations of a tech-savvy public while preserving the integrity of public sector employment.

Thank you to Parth Shah and Brandon Levey for sharing their experiences and insights in advancing AI's role in government. For those interested in exploring further, visiting Polimorphic and Ichi’s web platforms offers additional resources and case studies on successful AI integrations.
