Introduction

Welcome to the Capstone Conversation blog, where we dive into the vibrant happenings of the Greater East Bay. In our quest to understand the innovations shaping our region and beyond, we recently sat down with Todd Pray, Chief Strategic Partnerships Officer at Lawrence Berkeley National Labs. With over a decade of experience at the lab, Todd brings a unique perspective on how national laboratories can drive commercial success and foster economic development.

Berkeley National Labs: A Hub of Innovation

Todd Pray began by providing an overview of his role at Lawrence Berkley National Lab (LBNL), focusing on the lab's associative work beyond the Department of Energy (DOE). As a critical component of the DOE, Berkeley Lab collaborates with many businesses, universities, and research institutes to push the boundaries of what is possible. Being part of the Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs), the lab's reach extends from federal entities like NASA and the USDA to private sector collaborations.

The Collaborative Network

The lab is deeply embedded in the Bay Area's scientific and entrepreneurial ecosystem. Its close ties with other national labs, such as Lawrence Livermore and Sandia, extend the collaborative efforts to include the entire region. These partnerships are crucial for fostering growth and innovation. Todd emphasized the vital mantra of "team science," which encourages working together on national issues related to health, security, energy, and the environment.

Strategic Partnerships and Economic Development

Todd explained how Berkeley Lab structures its research through six major areas, even though it's not a teaching institution like traditional universities. He highlighted the lab's mission to engage with industry, commercialize technologies, and support economic development. This is achieved through the lab's support of small and large companies in translating research discoveries into market-ready solutions.

The Role of Cyclotron Road

A standout initiative is Cyclotron Road, an embedded entrepreneurship program affiliated with the lab. This program has successfully incubated over 80 companies and helped launch pioneering ventures like geothermal energy production and sustainable aviation fuel. Noteworthy participants like Furbo and 12 exemplify the program's success in fostering innovation and commercial growth.

Navigating the World of AI and Sustainable Technology

An intriguing part of the discussion focused on AI and its burgeoning role across various sectors. The lab's approach to AI spans enhancing scientific discovery, improving energy efficiency in data centers, and exploring sustainable computing solutions. Collaborations with major tech companies help develop more energy-efficient microelectronics and promote less intensive AI methodologies.

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Todd shared valuable advice for budding entrepreneurs looking to engage with the lab or enter the rigorous Cyclotron Road program. The importance of understanding your market, customer needs, and developing a strong business model cannot be overstated. Programs like the NSF I-Corps offer essential support in crafting a successful pitch or startup strategy.

Conclusion

As we wrap up our conversation with Todd Pray, the takeaway is clear: LBNLs are a cornerstone in the East Bay's innovation ecosystem. With ongoing efforts to develop strategic partnerships and cultivate emerging technologies, the lab continues to impact regional and global scales profoundly. Whether interested in partnering with the lab or simply learning from its technological advancements, there is much to gain from engaging with this vibrant research community.
